Meet the Team

Dr. Karen Harkin

Senior Veterinarian & Superintendent

Dr. Karen Harkin completed her Veterinary Science degree at Sydney University, graduating in 1995. Since then Karen has worked as a small animal veterinarian treating the dogs and cats (and occasional rabbits, guinea pigs, birds etc) of Sydney. Karen first started working in Matraville in 2001 and (except for a short period away while her children were young) she has worked in the area ever since. Karen knew from a young age that she wasn’t suited to sitting down all day in a desk job and loves the variety of being a general practice vet. She is especially interested in Internal Medicine and has completed extra studies in this area but also enjoys surgery, dentistry and preventative health care. Karen values the importance of pets in our lives and takes great pleasure getting to know her patients and their owners.

Are you a pet owner? What do you have?

Of course! Many would know my dog Louie- a small crossbreed mutt. I also have a big fat cat, Beanie, who prefers not to visit the clinic unless absolutely necessary!

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island?

Lots of sunscreen, water and hopefully some other people who are well equipped and know how to set up tents, start fire, find food – these are not my strong points!

If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be?

Tricky question, maybe a bee – I like to be busy and useful.

What celebrity would you like to meet over a cup of coffee?

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki as I am sure he could talk for hours on a variety of subjects and answer any science question I could think of.

Meet the rest of the team.
